Data Loggers

A data logger is an electronic device that records data over time or about location either with a built-in instrument or sensor or via external instruments and sensors. Data loggers are implicitly stand-alone devices, while typical data acquisition systems must remain tethered to a computer to acquire data. This stand-alone aspect of data loggers implies onboard memory that is used to store acquired data. Sometimes this memory is very large to accommodate many days, or even months, of unattended recording. This memory may be battery-backed static random access memory, flash memory, or EEPROM. Earlier data loggers used magnetic tape, punched paper tape, or directly viewable records such as "strip chart recorders".

Data loggers are used in a wide variety of applications, including:

  • Environmental monitoring: Data loggers can be used to monitor environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and light levels. This data can be used to track changes in the environment over time, identify trends, and identify potential problems.
  • Industrial monitoring: Data loggers can be used to monitor industrial processes such as temperature, pressure, and flow rates. This data can be used to ensure that processes are running smoothly and efficiently, and to identify potential problems before they cause a disruption.
  • Scientific research: Data loggers can be used to collect data in a variety of scientific research applications, such as climate research, geological surveying, and medical research.
  • Medical applications: Data loggers can be used to monitor patients' vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature. This data can be used to track patients' progress and to identify potential problems.

Data loggers are a versatile and powerful tool that can be used in a wide variety of applications. They offer a number of advantages over manual data collection, including:

  • Accuracy: Data loggers can collect data more accurately than manual methods.
  • Efficiency: Data loggers can collect data automatically, freeing up personnel to focus on other tasks.
  • Flexibility: Data loggers can be used to collect data in a variety of environments and conditions.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Data loggers can save time and money by reducing the need for manual data collection.

If you are looking for a way to collect data accurately, efficiently, and flexibly, then a data logger is a great option.
